Baby Alpacas
Cedar Springs Alpacas had twelve babies (cria) born on our farm in 2010. Three of the cria are girls (Gidget, Black Velvet & Camille) and nine of them are boys (Prince Henry, Sequoia, Gabriel, Picasso, Palance, Pallidan, Platinum, Firestone and Oliver). This number of boys versus girls is very unusual since most years produce approximately an equal number of the genders.
The cria will remain with their mothers to nurse and learn alpaca behavior until they are approximately six months old. At that time, we will wean them as their mothers, all of whom are pregnant again, prepare to give birth to their 2011 batch of cria.
One event we enjoy most about our cria is watching them run together as a pack in the evenings just before dusk. This activity, called pronking, is great fun for the cria as they dodge each other and jump in the air in joy.
