Why Alpacas?
Why not some other animal like horses, chickens, sheep or pigs? Why not raise nursery stock? All of these ideas could generate a profit. Other small farms prove there is profit from these endeavors. Alpacas work for us.
Chickens and pigs are not compatible with our wedding facility because of the noise and the odor. We did not have enough land to profit from nursery stock. Horses are money pits and boarding them is a pain. Sheep might work but did not produce the fleece quality we desired. So, alpacas were perfect for our purpose.
Alpacas are a great investment. If you can raise and breed them on your own property, you have all of the business advantages of a home-based business. Repairs and upkeep to part of your property might qualify as business expenses which are deductible items on your tax return. Taking advantage of depreciation schedules and Section 179 of the tax code might also benefit you significantly. We can provide you with information about the investment and business advantages for which you might qualify. You also should consult an accountant when it comes to tax matters concerning raising and breeding alpacas.
Alpacas are Great with Kids!
Sandi and I are grandparents. Both of our daughters have a child in their family and we want animals that are safe for children. Our oldest grandchild Emelia has been in the barn and pastures with our alpacas since she was 2 years old and has cuddled and loved the alpacas for almost her entire life.
We welcome kids with their families to our farm. Alpacas love well-behaved children and identify with them better than with adults, probably because of their small stature.
Are Alpacas for You?
Sandi and I believe that people who own rural property can become successful alpaca ranchers/farmers. All it takes is a desire to establish your own business and a path to follow. We at Cedar Springs Alpacas are happy to assist you along the way.
In addition, alpaca businesses can join local and national associations that offer great information to newcomers and experienced alpaca breeders. CABA (Columbia Alpaca Breeders Association) offers assistance and networking to members in or near the Willamette Valley. AOBA (Alpacas Owners and Breeders Association) connects members across the country and internationally.
So, check out this website and schedule a visit with us. We look forward to meeting you.
